Thoughts about books from students, their trusty librarian, and often their Language Arts teacher, too…

And down the stretch they come!

If you’re not familiar with the phrase I’ve used as the title of this week’s post, then you should be! What would the Kentucky Derby – often referred to as “the most exciting two minutes in sports” – be without hearing the announcer say those words as the thoroughbreds make their way to the finish line? Well, I guess it would still be the run for the roses, but I digress…

My POINT, dear readers, is that WE are also thundering toward the finish line! Twilight will be in theaters on FRIDAY and a mere four days later we will load our buses and invade the cinema en masse! Well, at least the Hart County crew will be!

I do apologize for the tardiness of getting this week’s post up, but I’ve been feeling rather under the weather. Incredibly cruddy, as a matter of fact. I think that I may be on the mend now, though. Just in time, huh?

Before I present our topic for your commenting pleasure, I feel some explanation is in order…

Did you read Twilight during our Book Club journey and now you want to read the read of the Saga? Have you read ALL the books and now are depressed that there’s not any more vampire goodness for you to devour? Well, either way you should definitely pay a visit to http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/ to have a read through Midnight Sun (from the main page, choose the “Twilight Series” tab at the top and then the “Midnight Sun” option from the choices on the left of that page to get to the right place).

It was to be a 5th book in the Saga and was going to re-tell the events of Twilight from Edward’s point of view. Stephenie Meyer had been working on it and had given drafts to some people she trusted to get feedback. One of those individuals leaked it to the Internet and Meyer felt so betrayed and hurt that she stopped writing the book. I can’t say that I blame her because I’d be devastated, too, but I do hope that as time heals her wounds that she will change her mind and go back to the project. There’s a good lesson in here about copyright that she details in her introduction to the draft. My students should not be surprised that I’m pointing THAT out. :)

I’d like you to do one of two things this week.

  • Read all or part of the partial draft of Midnight Sun that Stephenie Meyer posted on her site and comment on what you think about how she has portrayed the events of Twilight from Edward’s perspective rather than the original version from Bella’s POV. Some questions you might consider include: Do you like what she created? Does it seem to fit with what you imagine Edward might think? Do you think she’s totally off the mark? Do you even want to know both sides of this story or is it better to just leave it alone?

OR

  • Describe at least one challenge that you think exists in getting Twilight to the big screen without messing it up. What moment did you love while reading that worries you when you consider that the movie might get it all wrong? Where do you think the danger zones are? Almost anything can look good in a movie trailer, but putting together a solid 1.5 to 2 hour experience that stays true to the source material tends to be VERY difficult. Stephen King is my favorite author for adults and movies based on his books almost NEVER turn out well for readers. There are some notable exceptions, but that’s not the topic right now.  ;)

Have at it, gang, and don’t forget to make this a DISCUSSION! Talk to each other! It makes the comment board a MUCH better reading experience.

The main thing I worry about with the movie would be that they create things that never happened in the book. This would totally ruin the plot of the movie if they did so. You should either stick to the orignal plots and things that happen in the book, or not even bother with making it into a movie.

I think one challenge that exists in getting Twilight to the big screen without messing it up is getting the actors to look like the characters are described in the book. If they do not get the actors to look almost or absolutely like the characters of Twilight I believe the movie will stink. Another problem will be the other book’s movies. They will have to film all the movies close together so to not show the vamps growing older. The moment that I worried that they might get wrong is the part where Bella and Edward decides they are meant for each other and Bella finds out her guess about what Edward is is correct. This moment of the movie should stick to the book cause if they ruin this moment the whole movie will be ruined from my perspective. It might not be the same for everybody else but it will be for me.

Well, Mrs. Northcutt, I would like you to know that when you first told me of Midnight Sun, I went to her website to check it out. At the time, I didn’t read past the first page for fear that it would leave me wanting more, and I would be unable to get it. Now, since you are ‘forcing’ me to read more, I have read several pages, and my predictions are confirmed. It is wonderful and I want to finish the story! I really like the idea of hearing the story from Edward’s point of view. He is such an interesting character and so unrealistic, that I am interested to see how Stepehenie Meyer would play the story out if he were telling it. Bella, of course, being human, is a much more realistic character, and though I really like her, there were times that she did get on my nerves when I was reading Twilight. I don’t think reading the story from Edwards POV would ever get on my nerves. I really, really hope she does finish it.

And hello there Courtney Atwell! I completely agree with you that when a movie is made from a book, it should stick to the plot as closely as possible. I’m guessing with some books, that is difficult, which is probably why movie’s often stray so much. However, when that does happen, it often ruins the movie for those of us who are readers. I think my biggest concern with the movie is not the plot, though, as much as the characters. Stephenie Meyer is so descriptive and exact when it comes to the characters that I think she makes it difficult for movie makers to match them on the mark. That isn’t a bad thing and only adds to the point that she is a great writer. However, as readers, even though we’ve seen the trailors, etc., I think we may find that we are disappointed in some of the characters, especially the Cullens and their impossible beauty. How exactly do you recreate that for the big screen without messing it up at least a little?

I have to agree w/ Courtney, b/c that would totally ruin the image of what really goes on in the book (they did it to “Blood and Chocolate” b/c they change EVERYTHING!!! It didn’t go by the book at ALL!! D:< !!) But anyways, the way the previews for it shows pretty much the same thing that goes on in the book. HOWEVER, it doesn’t mention that they have a Cullen Family Crest that they must wear at all time… I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, I think it makes them seem more proud of who they are and what kind of vampire clan they are. Overall, I think that the movie will be the way it suppose to be and hopefully produce the other books into a blockbuster hit!!! :D

    High School
the main thing about the movie that i think might be messed up is all the non human things that happend in twilight. like in the book the way bella got the crap beat out of her by james might be a dissapointment in the movie. i mean i saw comercials for that 1 part and its seemed a bit messed up… but thats my opinion.
    ———————————————————————————–

on a mental note that bothers me thats not about twilight is Kingdom Hearts III The Keyblade War
i mean who doesent already want that game. kh1 and kh2 was a real success but from watching the youtube videos for it with my friends.. well lets just say it seemed weird. it showed many keyblades.
and many say its set in the past. the ones that object should really watch the youtube video that shows what the letter at the end of the game says. [sumerized] it says that there was a great war between the dark and light and according to kh3 we might have to fight that war. sad though bc theres no sora in this one bc its the past. but then again who is the guy that looks like sora?? maybe its his dad or grandfather? idk bc no ones parents are ever mentioned.

One challenge that I think will exist in trying to put “Twilight” on the big screen is trying to keep the movie as written in the book. For example, the movie should have the same plot. Especially the climax of the story. I also don’t think the characters should act differenttly than what they do in the book. For example, the book shows that Bella has some intrest in Edward. If the characters changed, Bella probably hated Edward and Edward killed Bella in the movie, which I don’t think would happen.

i think that one of the challenges of getting twighlit to big screens would be gettin all the little details.also i think that its gonna be a challenge to bring the charecters to the screen as i see them.because from the trailer i didnt picture edward that way so i want to see the other charecters :D

after seeing the trailer i worry about how they “jump” (whenever edwards fighting with james, ect.) but it looks like their flying!
I really dont like how the special effects looked for the movie. Also i totally agree with courtney, if they not only put things in, but leave things out, its gonna be a bummer to watch.

One of my favorite parts in the book is when edward takes bella out to that field and glows for her. (= i loved that part in the book.

I hope its the same for in the movie!

    Hello!!

I think that the hardest challenge to make Twilight as appealing on the “big sreen” as the book is, will be the connection between Bella and Edward. Even though it is really hard to show the connection between them in the book it is probably easier to write about it then to act it. Like, if the actress that plays Bella and the actor that plays Edward hated each other it would be very diffucult to play their characters. But in a book everything is just worte down and in this case it is fictional so there would be no static between their connection. I honestly hope that Bella and Edward’s actors will be able to bring the tension that their characters create in the books.

The moment that I loved was when Bella and Edward just start hanging out and she doesn’t know for sure what he is and he’s telling her to say it just say it and she’s says “vampire”..I just hope that when they put this on the “big screen” Edward and Bella will have as much chemistry as they have in the book.

    S’later!!

I think that one thing they might have trouble with getting right on the movie Twilight would be Bella and Edward’s over all relationship. I think that it would be hard because Bella and Edward’s relationship is special and I think it would be hard to portray what relationship they have in the book.

I think the hardest part of getting “twilight” on the bigscreen without messing up the intesity of rosalie hating Bella. I just think that rasalie in the book is very rood to Bella. But, she made the book very interesting. I hope the movie will be as good as teh book.

I agree with Ashley completly, I am worried that the movie wont be able to show the true conection and passion between Bella and Edward. I hope the movie can show the strong and intense feelings between the two. I hope the movie can show how Edward acted towards Bella when they first sat next to each other in class.

I have imagined in my head while reading the book the way the charectors should act and be seen, I hope that the movie can relate some what to my view of each scene and charector.

I really love Twilight in Edward’s point of view. Mainly because we think alike. lol. Some of my most favorite parts in the book, are when Bella and Edward are together. They have such an undescribable connection, and I hope it will show on the big screen.

I have to say though, that I am VERY glad I read the book, BEFORE I go to see the movie, because I definitely would have never read the book afterwards. This is because Im really not into Fantasy Fiction, but Stepehenie Meyer did such a good job, putting action and romance in the book to make it more realistic, and relatable to.

I cant wait to see the movie, and hopefully I will get around to reading New Moon…

I think that Midnight Sun really captures Edward’s personality. And I love that it takes on Edward’s point of view. I mean, you never really could get inside his head. he wasn’t as expressive as bella it seems like. And it explains more about his struggle as a vampire and him trying not to hurt bella.

After having read Midnight Sun I really hope that she decides to finish the novel. In fact I wouldn’t mind the whole series being presented from Edward’s perspective. It adds a whole level of understanding of Edward and his actions that might go misunderstood or dismissed as well as it allows you to get to know all the Cullens better. I find myself wanting to know all of the characters better and by adding another perspective I seem to get that. Regardless, Stephanie Myer is a wonderful storyteller and I’ll read whatever she chooses to write. In fact, I’m sure I’ll read all of her stories multiple times just like I have with the Twilight Series & the Host.

As far as my concerns about the movie I really only have one: the scene from the meadow where Edward allows Bella to see him for the first time in the sun. I have a mental image of what that looks like and I hope that they are able to provide an accurate picture of that and what that scene meant for both of them. However, I am not going to get upset over subtle differences or dialogue additions/edits/cuts. So much of the book is spent inside of Bella’s head that some creative liberties and workings will be necessary I think to bring it to life. As long as the overall movie stays true to the story I think it will be GREAT.

On the subject of Midnight Sun.

I’ve read the first Chapter and a half and would like to say it’s AMAZING! First of all, I love Stephanie Meyer and the way she tells things, it’s like you’re right there in the story yourself. The description is outstanding. But other than loving the way she writes I like Midnight Sun because i’ve always wondered what Edward’s feelings really were, how hard it was exactly for him to restist killing Bella the first time he’d been around her and things like that. It also allows you to know more on the “Cullen” side, which personally, I love. I wish that Ms. Meyer would finish this novel and produce the other three in Edward’s veiw also. I think it’d also be neat for her to write New Moon in Jacob’s perspective. But anyway, if you haven’t read Midnight Sun you should. =] You should also read The Host, which is another great novel by Ms. Meyer, if you haven’t already.

And on the subject of Twilight the Movie…

I think, and hope, that over all this movie is going to be Great. From watching the previews, which I know isn’t the entire movie, It looks pretty close to the book. Although, a few things I’ve noticed that sort of bother me is the fact that the cars aren’t right. Edward is supposed to be driving a volvo… and Rosalie is supposed to have a red BMW M3 (or whatever) not a Mercadies. Also, at the the scene when Edward and Bella are at the restraunt in Port Angles Bella is supposed to have on a Blue sweater and Edward compliments her on it. But anyway, I suppose everything can’t be the same.

Overall I think it’ll be neat though, they’ve added a lot of things that weren’t in the books. So i’m really excited to see how it all turns out. =]

I didnt really think that Edward would REALLY think
He thinks nothing like Bella discribes him as
In Bella’s mind Edward is an angle but in Edward’s mind he’s a monster and he can’t control himself to think about killing Bella
its hard to think that how bad the frist day was around Bella that he ended up loveing her when he frist hated her

the most worries is in the book is when bella hits her head on a mirror but in the movie she hits a corner of something instead of the mirror ( i saw that in one of the movie trailers)im worried that the small things in the movie will not be in the movie!!!!

one challenge about getting twilight to the big screen without messing it up would be finding the right people to play the characters, and sticking to the plot, and setting of the story.

I think one of the problems they might have in the movie is putting everything that’s in the book in the movie(s). there is so much in twilight and almost all of it is necessary for the story.

i think one thing they may not get right in the movies is when bella first meets edward and sees him as a living god. i think that they should get it as close as they can to match the book, because the first impression matters.

OK, we are down the home stretch and I am so excited. I will be going with a large group (including my daughter Kelsey) to see the movie right after school today and I am counting the hours!! I have seen all the trailers and have to say that I am content with most of the casting. Oddly enough, the only character that I am not sure that I like is Jasper. The guy they have cast just does not mesh with my mental image of the edgy soldier… my feelings were reinforced when I purchased the movie book for my library and discovered that the actor has RINGLET CURLS in one scene. If you have read Eclipse, you know Jasper’s back story and it just does not fit with the idea of ringlets! But, I am going into the movie with an open mind and I truly hope that he is so convincing that I forget all about my concerns.

Now, on to Midnight Sun. I have read it and I love it. It helped me understand the pain and suffering that Edward had to endure in order to be close to Bella. The first day in Biology class was a wonderful scene when you realize how much internal conflict he went through in order to let her live through that block. And, we saw another side to Edward. We got to see that dangerous vampire side of him that Bella doesn’t focus on as much. It helped me see the depth of his character as he is progressing through the books. My biggest problem is that she didn’t finish the book! Let’s all hope that she gets bored and decides to go back to that book. Even though I read all 264 pages, I would still buy the book so I could reread the beginning and then see the rest of it.

They don’t need to miss the small details that mean alot in the main parts of the book. The movie is like 2 hours and 30 minutes long so I highly doubt that they are gonna miss much. After what Mrs. Day stated about Jasper and the ringlet curls, I was kinda shocked that he was the one playing him. When I got my first look at the other chacters, I thought the guy who’s playing Emmett was the guy who was Jasper!!! (no joke) b/c I imagined that Japer would have that kind of hair style (eventhough that he was in the civil war, I still thought he would have a buzz cut hair to modernized with the present) After my “foolish” mistake about the cast, I accepted the man playing Jasper and moved on…=]

I just seem to be having trouble pulling up Midnight Sun… Oh well, I’ll just agree with what everybody is saying about it and dig up the pacients to wait for it when it gets published and comes out… *sigh* …=[

OK, I’m a little late jumping on the bandwagon, but when I do, I jump with both feet…I just finished Twilight and New Moon between yesterday and today and now I HAVE to see the movie.

One thing that does worry me is when little things get mixed up or left out. For example, the car crash scene in the book is quite graphic, with the van nearly killing Bella not once, but twice (rolling over, etc). In the movie trailer, I feel it wasn’t portrayed as quite the dramatic event that my “brain-movie” made it to be while I was reading.

    We’ll see!

I liked it as good as the book [if not better]. The connection between Bella and Edward was so strong. It also had comical parts, which I very much enjoyed. =]] My favorite part was when Bella went to see the Cullen’s house for the first time, I also liked the baseball game. I really hope a second movie will be made. I have heard so many things about if and when the next movie will be released. Anybody heard from promising sources? I also agree with Keith Logsdon when he says that the fight scene might not be what I expected in the movie but it was awsome. I loved the book and the movie but as Mrs.Martin always says, “Books will always be better than movies!” In the movie I thought that the meadow scene would be different and it was. But, I still loved it. When I saw Bella and Edward for the fisrt time I knew they were the perfect actors/actresses for the parts. Now that I am reading New Moon I don’t know if I can stop, it is that good! :)

I think that they might have some trouble with getting the little details and parts that everyone loves into the movie. Sure they get every conversation or every little detail in but they could put the important ones in there. There will be people who are disappointed because they will have to cut out some of the small parts but the movie is still the best movie I have ever seen. In my opinion they got the right actors to play the parts of the characters and the right settings. I thought it was the best!

  • 114    Courtney James // Jan 22, 2009 at 11:51 am

Well, I think that in the Twilight movie the actors will get mainly one scene wrong….the first kiss between Bella and Edward. When you read about their first kiss, it’s so descriptive and romantic. I don’t think the actors of the Twilight movie will be able to act out how descriptive it is. Plus the actors may not even choose to put their first kiss in the forest. They may decide to put it later on in the movie.

I agree with Connery Bailey. I think a big challenge for the actors of the Twilight movie will be do act exactly like the characters in the book. It might be hard for them to reflect the character’s personality.

That’s all I have to say for right now. I hope everyone who reads Twilight really likes the book. Bye!

the thing that would be a challenge would be make all of the important stuff in the movie and not make the movie to long and when they make the other books into a movie how are they able to make edward the same age and bella a little older because vampires can’t age.
