Hello, all! I recently acquired a LOT of free time courtesy of Ice Storm ‘09 and I thought I’d try to put some of it to good use. Also, I was inspired by my blog-mate, Mrs. Scott, getting back on the proverbial horse – so to speak. And well, this might actually be a good opportunity for me to get the word out about a movie based on a book that I really enjoyed.
Next Friday, an animated movie based on Neil Gaiman’s Coraline will hit theaters. I read it back when it was published (2003-04ish) because I had enjoyed his work for adults and was curious to see whether his delightfully creepy style would translate well for a younger audience. I was not disappointed!
This is the story of a young girl’s scary adventure within the confines of her own home and I think that those of you who are into either of the afore-mentioned genres would do well to check this one out sometime. Well, you should really read the book (or the graphic novel version!) and THEN see the movie if you’re asking for my advice.
Check out the movie trailer HERE!
Also, you might want to check out the YouTube channel (if you’re not at school) dedicated to the film which features tons of clips or a really cool article from Wired magazine that goes through what it takes to create an intricate stop-motion animation project such as this. Coraline was directed by Henry Selick, who also directed The Nightmare Before Christmas. You know that’s a cool movie and this looks like it will be too!
Last, but certainly not least, you should also check out Neil Gaiman’s official site created for his work geared toward youngsters (and those who love them). Come on! It’s called Mouse Circus! Doesn’t that make you want to look? At least a little?
Oh and did I mention that Neil Gaiman just won the Newbery Medal for his newest work that I am DYING to read, The Graveyard Book? Well, you can learn all about that one, as well, at his marvelous Mouse Circus site, as well. I will not be surprised if it is not in my possession by the end of the weekend.
So, what do you think? Are you interested in seeing this movie or reading this book?

I have seen the trailer on this one and I had no idea it was based on a book. I’m not familiar with the author. It looks very interesting, so I may have to check this one out myself!

He’s most excellent! One of his most famous projects was the comic series “Sandman” which was written for an adult audience. He does quite a bit of his work on the “dark and twisty” side of things, but I love that stuff anyway.
I’ve got his Newbery, “The Graveyard Book” on order! I hope it gets here tomorrow!
Oh, and how do you like the new threaded comments feature? We can now directly comment on comments! I think it’s very meta…

Alright, well I have read this book [well I read like the first 2 chapters] and ummm … I didn’t like it. I may have to go back and try to read it again, because it sounds like I missed out on something. I’m anxious to see how the movie turns out, and if I like it or not. Maybe if once I see the movie, I may want to finish the book. I don’t know …

I think that I recall you giving this one a brief chance. It might have just been another slow starter.
Have you had anything to read while we’ve been stuck in our houses?

Since we’ve been out of school for the Winter Storm, I have had ALOT of extra time, [especially since I was out of electricity for three whole days!]! Since I couldn’t entertain myself with something electronic, and I couldn’t go anywhere, because the roads were slick, I had to find alternative entertainment sources … Breaking Dawn! I have about 150 pages left, and I’m really anxious to finish the book, I’m not sure if the anxiousness is due to the fact that I love the book and I can’t wait to find out the ending, or because I’m getting tired of reading about Isabella Marie Swan, and I’m ready for some new reading material!!!
