Let’s Get This Party Started!

2009 Book Projects - Spring · 6th Grade · 8th Grade · Books

Well, YOU might not think it’s a party, but I beg to differ.

Today we kick off the LG 6th and 8th Grade Book Projects! Why no 7th, you ask? Well, they’re still kinda swamped with the whole portfolio thing, so they’re plenty busy. That doesn’t mean that 7th graders can’t get some excellent reading suggestions from the lists both other grades are using, though!

To get started on the right foot, I want everyone in both classes to respond to the following question:

What did you choose as your first book to read and what made you pick it?

Mrs. Scott and I will be looking to see that you actually put some content in your answer. Was it the plot? The cover? (we all know you’re not supposed to judge by those but they DO matter sometimes!) The characters sounded relatable/interesting? You’ve got to give us something to work with here. Not only for the fact that your grade will suffer if you can’t back up your own opinion, but because of the SECOND part of your assignment. That would be…

After telling us what book you chose and why, you need to make a comment about SOMEONE ELSE’S comment.

In other words, you’re going to respond to them just like you were talking to them in real life. Not that I’m sure I need to bring up “real life” since I’m sure most of you realize how commenting works if nowhere else than on social networking sites like MySpace.

Alrighty then! Have at it, kids!

Us grown-up-types are anxiously awaiting what YOU have to say!

-Mrs. N.

The first book I have choosen is “Sweethearts”. There are various reason why I choose this book. One reason was because of the adorable cover. Sorry for judging a book by its cover!! =]
But, who doesn’t like a book with a heart cookie that has had a bite taken out?
I also choose it because I read the description on the back and I love stories with a mystery involved into them. I was also captured by the idea of that these kids are social outcast. I have always been very social so I am excited to read about these two social outcasts.

I guess I will post a comment after other people do since there are none to comment on as of now!

    Remember…
    IHeartYou!!!

P.S. Hopefully I will Heart this book!!
    =]

Alright, Ashley since your the only other person to have posted a comment besides me, I guess I am forced to reply to you … oh wow. Well, I also considered reading this book, because I thought it would be neat and different. A mystery inside of a realistic story always ends up great. Let me know if it’s good enough for me to read … or if its just a waste of time.

Well for starters, there are several books on the list that I thought would be worth my time to read, butttt since we only had to read a couple I had to narrow my choices. So, for my first book, I am reading This is What I Did, By: Ann Dee Ellis. The reason I chose this book, is that after I read the book summary, I was pleasantly suprised that it seemed a whole lot like my favorite book ever Black Water, By: Eve Bunting [Black Water is one of the only two books that I have ever read TWICE, so YES I absolutely LOVE it!] . I am really excited to read This is What I did, I think it will be very suspenseful. I have actually already read the first 2 pages, and they were kind of disturbing, and really freaked me out, like I read the first sentence and thought “… um okayy” .

Dylan obviously got it, too, but I know other people might not. As I said in class, my husband is not a fan of happy endings in books and movies and I think that’s the intent behind your comment, correct? But this isnt the only reason I choose this book. The inside cover tell you a little about it and I thought it was very intersesting.

    [Reply]

    Mrs. Northcutt Reply:

Oooh! I just “read” Artichoke’s Heart as an audiobook this weekend as I was driving to my hometown and back. I thought that Rosemary, the main character, was a very realistic girl and I really enjoyed being with her on the personal journey that she took over the course of the novel. She learns a great deal about who she really is when she decides to stop hiding behind her weight issues and start living her life. It gets a thumbs-up from me!

    Becca Reply:

Kyla let me know if this book is good or not, because Mrs. Scott also suggested it to me but I’m not sure if I’ll like it.

    [Reply]

    Mrs. Northcutt Reply:

I have to say that I am also a big fan of this book! I love how Frankie asserts herself and becomes a force to be reckoned with over the course of the book. She is smart and creative and she wants people to appreciate her for those qualities, but it’s difficult when her family thinks of her as their harmless “Bunny Rabbit” and her fellow students seem to appreciate her physical attributes more than her intellectual ones. We also have this book on audio if you want to listen on CD or an MP3 player/iPod!

    [Reply]

    [Reply]

    Mrs. Northcutt Reply:

Great choice, Savannah! I think you’ll see lots of parallels between this book and the novel you’re reading in Literacy class, Nancy Farmer’s House of the Scorpion. I like to read books that make me reevaluate my opinions of controversial topics and this book certainly did that. As Jenna slowly begins to put the pieces of her life together you’ll be empathizing with her every step of the way and thinking about what her existence really means in the bigger scheme of things.
