I’m going to keep this post trimmed down a bit. If you’d like to see some of my other comments, suggestions and general frou-frou, visit the 8th grade post which contains the same assignment…
This week’s topic involves setting. Do you remember what the two components of setting in a literary or dramatic work happen to be? Well, in case you’ve forgotten, those are time and place (aka where and when). Here’s your assignment:
- Describe the setting from one of your project books (if you’ve read more than one to this point). You must include both time and place in your answer.
AND
- Explain how the setting impacts the story that you are reading. For example, people would be going about their day in different ways depending on where and when they lived. Life in Colonial Williamsburg was certainly different than it is in modern-day Louisville! Also, you could include thoughts about how the setting makes the book better or worse. Or if the setting seems authentic. Or if the setting seems just flat-out strange! This is an OPINION question, so please try to express an original thought here. We know that you have lots of those.
Remember that after you write your own comment that you need to also comment on something that a classmate has written! Each week you should be writing AT LEAST 2 comments!

The setting of this story is at Maine in the summer at Ali’s aunts house. Yes the setting does have an impacted on the story because her aunt lives near a lake that is scary, where things happen!!

the setting was mostly outside. The time of day was morning, afternoon, and night. the setting inpacts the story by that if they wasnt outside most of the time they couldnt fight and catch the evil vilans. If they didnt go through the whole day and never be home then the reflection wouldnt be in the book so much and wouldnt help valkyrie out alot.

The setting of my book is in there new school of Whittaker Magnet School. When George excepted they invitation to the school, Kate was forced to go to Whittaker because she was now in the district. She wanted to stay at Lincoln with her friends, but she had to go!
The setting impacted the story. If Kate and George never moved to Whittaker, they would have never have new abilities and new goals!

the name of my book is Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Curtis. the book takes place in the past about the early 1890’s.
the setting impacts the story by how slaves were born free into a little city made by some guy named Elijah he was the first boy born free in Buxton
I thinck the setting makes it better becouse if it was present day it wouldnt be more interesting than it was in the 1890 becouse there wasnt that much technolgy back then than there are now.

Don’t forget, kids, that you need to tell us what book you are reading! It seems that many of you are giving us good descriptions, but other readers won’t know what book you are talking about if you don’t include a title.
Also, I think that some of you need to focus on the “time” factor of your setting more in terms of a historical sort of “when” rather than time of day. For example, is your book set in the past or the present? Tell us that as opposed to whether it is morning or evening.
Finally, you need to include some description of how the setting impacts the story. For example, whether the book is set in a big city or a small town would affect how the characters act and what they do. You can’t exactly go hop on the Hart County subway to go to Munfordville, can you? If your book is set in an alternate universe or the future that would change things, too.
Basically, give us more info!

well i had to switch books i finished my 1st so now im on my second. its called dragon slippers. the setting i would say is in an alternet universe or made up land because it talk about borders and areas that never existed. i would say that it is set back in time because they have to weave they’re own dresses. well the setting impacts the story because she has to weave these magic harnesses to take back the dragons from the control of the dragon slippers O.o so all in all its a very good and different fantasy. oh and she is a master weaver or something so thats why the setting impacts the story.

My first book was Skullduggery Pleasant. The Setting is in present time at her dead uncle’s funeral.at about 12:30 in the afternoon.
The Setting affects the whole story because, the whole story was about finding out who killed her uncle.
It would affect Stephanie because, she would of never met Skullduggery Pleasant.
She would of never new about magic and met so many of Skullduggey’s friends.
Skullduggery would of never crashed the Bently.
Stephanie would of never knew about the Book of Names.
That pretty much clears it up!
