Week #2 – 8th Grade

2009 Book Projects - Spring · 8th Grade · Books

All right, ladies and gentlemen! Everything seems to be galloping along quite well so far! Let me be frank for a moment. The KY Oaks and the Derby are this weekend. The following post will reflect that reality.

I know that some of you have completely read your first project book and others have even read two already! How very industrious of you! Seriously, keep up the great work.

If any of you are interested in going ahead and starting a Book Video for the final part of this project, let me know and I will gladly help you get started! The Technology Fair is right around the turn, after all, and Book Videos make excellent Multimedia entries! But I digress…

This week’s topic involves setting. Do you remember what the two components of setting in a literary or dramatic work happen to be? Well, in case you’ve forgotten, those are time and place (aka where and when). For example, if I wrote a book whose characters attended the Kentucky Derby, then my setting most likely would be in Louisville on the first Saturday in May. I might go on to describe whether it was a beautiful day to be at Churchill Downs or if it was rainy and yucky and muddy. Eww! See where I’m headed? No blinders on you?

Here’s your assignment:

  • Describe the setting from one of your project books (if you’ve read more than one to this point). You must include both time and place in your answer.

AND

  • Explain how the setting impacts the story that you are reading. For example, people would be going about their day in different ways depending on where and when they lived. Life in Colonial Williamsburg was certainly different than it is in modern-day Louisville! Also, you could include thoughts about how the setting makes the book better or worse. Or if the setting seems authentic. Or if the setting seems just flat-out strange! This is an OPINION question, so please try to express an original thought here. We know that you have lots of those.

With the Kentucky Derby coming up this weekend, it’s a great time to listen to the Call to Post and scream, “AND THEY’RE OFF!” to encourage you to get moving!

The gates are officially open! Comment away!

The setting in my book the Adoration of Jenna Fox is in sunny California. She was originaly from Boston NY,but had to move for personal reasons.Although the time of the book is more a future tense, and because of that it changes how she lives her everyday life and also effects how she interacts with other “people”.

The book i read “I Heart You, You Haunt Me” was a great book. The setting of the book was at high school and Ava’s house mainly. Ava has had a bad year she lost her boyfriend to a innocent dare and now she blames herself. The setting has a tremendous amount to do with the way the book turns out because if it was not in high school then i would’nt be able to connect as well as i could because if it was in modern day i mean people die everyday of common accidents and in high school you have a little more pressure because everyone might think you done it then school would be awful. “I Heart You, You Haunt Me” is a WONDERFUL book i loved it and i think any (girl) would like it to if your up for heartache, love, romance, and ghosts!

    Dear blog people…

This weeks post question is “Describe the settin in one of your project books”. The Alchemyst is set in California..where you know it’s sunny and hot and stuff like that.

In one scene where Dr. John Dee is trying to take the Codex (a book full of magical stuff thats really powerful) from Nicholas Flamel. Dr. Dee brings these Golems or Men of Clay..they’re literally men made out of clay. But the sun starts to dry them out from their usual state of gooeyness and makes them hard and flaky and well…breakable. So Dr. Dee loses 2 out of the three big clay things but ultimately wins the fight. Still the climate affected that scene alot because those clay guys could’ve done alot more damage if they were in their regular state. So thanks for reading!

In my book Cracker, it is set in vietnam in WW2. Its full of jungles, and small villages. The setting impacts the story by making Cracker lost, confused and scared. The troops feel the same way. The jungle of course is very hot and humid.

The setting of my book TTYL is present time its real life stuff and it happends today!!! It is also in the school year..

The setting of the story is an important part of the book bc it all happens during the school year and if it dident have the book in the school year then the whole book would have to be changed!

    Tabitha Dennis Reply:

The setting of my book, This is What I Did, is prestent day at it takes place mostly on a street called Judge. The author doesn’t really elaborate on the setting so I don’t know a whole lot about it, because truely it isn’t important to the story, it just really isn’t.

in the book Me, The Missing, And The Dead, the setting is a taxi cab place. Violet is setting on a shelf in a urn. The setting impacts the story of where and why she was there.

    Hello All

I have finished 2 books on the list but I don’t want to use the other book I have read. It was a good book but I just don’t want to use it. So I will keep telling you about my first book “Sweethearts” by Sara Zarr.

The setting in this book is in a rural town where almost everyone knows everyone else. It is also set in a modern time. I know this because there are cell phones and other modern technology things.

I think that the setting makes the book better in my opinion because I like books set in a modern time because I can relate to the people in the story. Well, I guess that’s all the opinion I have at this point!

    S’Later!

well my book The Hunger Games, it is set in the future somewhere. Katniss lives in the seem of district 12, which is where all the poor people live. So since she’s poor she has to hunt and gather food to keep her and her family alive. Well after she gets picked for the hunger games the setting is in the woods. Since she hunts in the woods, this gives her an advantage during the games. OH and I finished the book.

The graveyard book is taken place in a grave yard in last century and this century. I heart you,you haunt me is taken place in this century in a small town. I think these seetings are good because that make the book make sence.
