2009 Book Projects - Fall · 7th Grade · 8th Grade · Books

Guess what, kids? We’ve got a bit of a game-changer on our hands this week!

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs. Martin’s 7th Grade Reading Class at Jessie Clark Middle School in Lexington, KY to the party! They will be joining us for the duration of the project and will be reading from the same book lists as the 7th and 8th graders at LeGrande. This is a big experiment for Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Scott and myself (Mrs. Northcutt) and we hope that it works like we think it will!

I hope that you LG kids have been enjoying your reading so far and I’ll be curious to see how many JCMS students already have gotten their hands on a project book! There are some really excellent choices on your list and I hope that you’ve been able find some material that has kept your attention! Oh, and I REALLY hope that you used part of the 3-day weekend to read! I know that I got quite a few comments on the Week #2 post to moderate over the break!

So, here are the prompts of the week…

  • What book did you choose as your second project book? JCMS students, just tell us what book you chose to read since you’re just getting started. LG students really should be reading their second book by now, but I also know that some of my students are on your third or fourth books! Go you!

and

  • Explain how you came to a decision on what book you were going to read for this round. Maybe you didn’t get your first choice when we started, maybe you picked it based on another student’s blog responses maybe I recommended it to you or maybe it was a random choice that just sounded good at the time. It could be just about anything. Whatever it was, we want to know!

All right, gang. Don’t be shy! Let’s get to know one another a little bit through our literature discussion!

My second book is Down The Rabbit Hole. I think it would be a good book because it would be about magiacla stuff. I like migian.

    [Reply]

    Mrs. Northcutt Reply:

Are you trying to tell us that you that you like magicians? You might need to re-think your choice if you want a book about magic. This one is a murder mystery that is connected with a theatre production of “Alice in Wonderland”. I think that you might have thought the Mad Hatter’s silhouette looked like a magician. If you need to make another choice, let me know but I think you might like this one if you give it a chance!

If you stick with this book, I want to hear what you think. I might like to read it myself.

A.]My second book is No More Dead Dogs. The main character is Wallace Wallace. The setting is in a school in the year,2ooo. The Main Idea is about an 8th grader name Wallace Wallace, Who never told a lie,and played The Giants. And Because he bring a bad opinon about ”Old Shep, My Pal”, His Litature Arts Teacher,Mr. Fogleman, gives him detention and has the book into a play, Which turns it into total chaos. But the more I read it, the more funnier it was.

B.] I thought it was a very, very funny book. At first, I didn’t understand how come there were four characters being Narrators in their own chapters. But then I thought it was a pretty good book.

An old barn that,in the pst, had a horrible murder scene of many children and now their unrested souls come back for revevnge. An old companion tells a story to a boy about a slave and his life (and ending moment) but how does he know this story so specifically? Read and find out…………….. IF YOU DARE!!!!

I’m reading No More Dead Dogs by Gordan Korman

I’m reading this book because it sounded like a funny book about a fooftball player who can only tell the truth. Another reason is that I can relate to Wallace Wallace ( main character ) beacause I play football to. My last reason for reading this hilariouse book is the back cover. The back cover states the plot of the story and it makes the book sound vary funny.

I chose The Hunger games. I’ve read it a gazillion times, but it’s still awesome. Okay, set the scene. A girl called Katniss gets her father blown to smithereens in a mine explosion. A few years later, her little sister Prim gets her name called in the reaping for the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are a punishment for the twelve districts devised by the Capitol for rebelling some years ago. What happens in them is that one boy and one girl, called “tributes”, get their name drawn at an event called the reaping. Those who get their names called get taken away to the Capitol to be on national telivision. Sounds fun, right? Wrong. They get dropped in an arena where winning means going back home in glory. Losing means certian death. Yes, it’s tribute against tribute in a bloody game of survival of the fittist. Katniss takes her sisters place, and gets whisked off to the Hunger Games. Will she survive this bloodbath of doom, or will she die a slow, painful death courtesy of the Gamemakers or another tribute? Read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins to find out. This is one game where losing does matter.

I chose this book because the title really caught my eye. I thought the book would fit in the horror genre. I enjoy reading horror books most.
Also I read the summary and it caught my attention because as I read it, it kinda started to sound like Twilight. Twilight is what really got me interested in reading alot more.

I choose this book beacause one of my friends recommended it some and she and I like the same types of books. The summary of the book made me want to read the book. The summary of the book says a girl doesnt fit in with her family or really at school so she needs another way to fit in, and the way she finds is interesting and makes you want to keep reading.

Also in the summeray it says ” Olive suddenly meets her own, more confident twin sister, the two of them go in search of their long – lost father.” that really made me want to read it and find out what happends. Cause sererusly a girl who thinks shes an only child that lives with the mother, finds out that she’s a twin, and then tries to find her father. That really made me want to read the book!

The book I chose to read for the book project was How Ya Like Me Now by Brendan Halpin. I chose this book not just by looking at the cover by reading the inside cover.
Based on what I already know, the book sounds very intresting but yet very realistic. This book is about a young teenage boy who is sent to live with his aunt and uncle after his father has passed away and his mmother is sent to rehab.
This young boy, Eddie, spends his time figuring out how and where he belongs in a new environment with a new family, school and struggling to meet new people.

I chose the Graveyard book by Neil Gaimen because i am a big horror and ghost book fan, when i read the summary i was intrigued to read this. Mainly because its is about a kid who is raised by ghosts in a graveyard…and it sounded like nothing that i have ever read before and i am sure i was right. Just by reading the back of this book i was excited to figure out why he had to be raised by ghosts and what would happen, Mrs. Martin also told me that she highly reccomended it and i can see why she did.

    Title-”The Adventures of tom Sawyer”
    Author-Mark Twain

I came to my decision on this book by reading the summary on the book list…”New York: Signet Classic, 2002. Presents the stories of two young boys up in a nineteenth-century Mississippi River town.” When i read this i sounded like a book i had at home! Except i hadnt read it yet. When i got home i got it off my shelf and started to read just to see if it could be one of my choices. Well i read that it was around the 1800’s [that i love to read about] and a few boys that gets in a lot of trouble.[trouble=lots of action].Then when i started reading the acuall story i could not get my nose out of it, even to eat!!

The book I chose for my 1st book is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The reason I chose the book is because on the summary the book is a war book. They choose 2 people out of 12 diffrent districts to have 24 participants in the “games.” 12 year old Prim is selected to be in the games but her sister Katniss, volunteers to take her sisters place. When she has to leave for the games she is partnered with the son of a baker. She is at a disadvantage because almost all of the other participants out weigh her by 50-100 lbs.

I chose the book Artichoke’s heart by Suzanne Supple. This book is about an overweight teen girl named Rosemary Goode. She hates being put down by the popular “Blue Birds”. But as she starts to lose weight and the “Blue Birds” start to accept her her mother becomes ill. I chose this book because it is a realistic fiction. I realy like realistic fiction because you can relate to the story.
