2009 Book Projects - Fall · 7th Grade · 8th Grade · Books

Guess what, LeGrande? We’re starting to get VERY close to beginning work on our Book Videos! This is our 4th week of reading and responding to one another and soon you will need to begin writing your scripts, creating your storyboards and choosing images to illustrate your thoughts! And just to remind you, I hope that you have been taking AR tests on your project books as you finish them! Passing your quizzes is a nice little chunk of your project grade!

Hey there, JCMS and Mrs. Martin! I know that you won’t probably be dealing with this post until the end of the week, but I hope that your experience commenting on the “Week #3″ post will have been successful and that you’re ready to keep going! I want you to keep in mind that the ultimate product for you will be a booktalk, even if I keep prattling on about scripts for Book Videos. Really, those Book Video scripts ARE a booktalk! We just record ourselves and add some images instead of reading them live in front of people. Hopefully, I might be able to pay Mrs. Martin a visit later this year and get YOU set up for video creation!

Now, the part you’ve all been waiting for…THIS WEEK’S PROMPT! For this round, we’re going to think about the literary element of PLOT. Plot, of course, is the sequence of events in a work and I want you to practice zeroing in on an exciting event. Doing this will help with the scripts/booktalks that you students will be writing!

  • When you’re creating your Book Videos/scripts in a week or so, we’re going to ask you to consider using a “cliffhanger” at the end to make viewers curious about what happens later on in your book. The videos and booktalks are supposed to persuade others to want to read the books that they are based on and what better way to do than than to leave the audience wanting more! Your job is to identify and describe an exciting plot point (aka EVENT) and then leave us with a couple of questions. To help you out, I’ve included the following example:

In Graceling by Kristin Cashore, Katsa is born “graced” – which means that she has a special skill. She has the Grace of killing and her uncle, King Randa, uses her as an enforcer to punish people who have wronged him in some way. Katsa, however, does not enjoy the errands that King Randa gives her, so she also spends time doing the work of the Council. They are a secret group that tries to right many wrongs within the Seven Kingdoms. While on a Council rescue mission, Katsa encounters a Graced fighter from the kingdom of Lienid. He is fascinating, but dangerous to her. Should she kill him to ensure that he will never be able to tells others that he saw her? Should she let him live to prove that she is not the monster many think her to be? If you want to find out, then read this book!

  • You may use any book that you have read on our project list to respond to this prompt!

If you have questions, please feel free to ask me or Mrs. Scott to help you! I’ve been really impressed with some of your comments and responses so far. Keep up the good work!

In my first book, The Adoration of Jenna Fox, she was living in Boston but she was in a bad wreck and had to move because she was “illegal.” She started missing her friends Kara and Locke, since. Since Jenna’s netbook “wasn’t working”, she went to her neighbors house and used his netbook. Jenna looked up Kara and Locke on the internet and found out where they are and more. The internet said that they are both… read the book to find out what happened to them and where they are now.

You know, Michael, I hadn’t connected those two books until you mentioned it! Most excellent observation, sir, and that comes from a dedicated “House of the Scorpion” fan.

Matt (HOS) and Jenna (AOJF) both come to some difficult realizations about who they are and how they came to be!

I think if you read this one you’d find that there are a great number of connections to be made between these thought-provoking books!

And the day his brother died. There is a fire and he can see it in his dream, and he hears someone talking saying shhhh! the angle is sleeping.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit and your description is very accurate!

What do you think about the whole “reptile brain” concept that the book describes?

O.k, so in chapter 8 of the book Artichoke’s Heart intitled “The C Word” Rosemary trys to figure out why her mother has been acting “wierd”. Her mother has been very pale and she has become very “sluggish” and tired. Rosemary then hears her mother talking to her aunt Mary saying that she is going to the doctor’s office to get a chest x-ray. Her mother then tells her that she has… What’s wrong with Rosemary’s mother? Why is she keeping it a secret? Read it and figure out!

Rosemary [the main charactor] is an over weight teen who likes this guy named Kyle and he is a football player, and BIG one. like 200 pounds big. so Rosmary likes him and is now trying to get in shape so he might like her. she also wants to get in shape because her mom has a beauty shop and KayKay [mean skinny girl] is getting her hair done for the school dance. So when Rosemary sees KayKay, she wants to get in shape, so that she can be like KayKay and have a boyfreind and also go to a school dance. will she get in shape like KayKay and get Kyle to like her ? Read the book to find out.

An exciting part of The Hunger Games that I have read so far was When the 12 districts come out to the crowd one at a time. When that happens and when district 1-11 come out Katniss and Peeta the baker’s son get ready to come out, the come out on FIRE!!!!!!!!!!! What happened? Will they survive the flames? How will the crowd respond to their entrance?

    Mrs. Northcutt Reply:

Katniss Everdeen – the girl on fire…

She really uses that image to her advantage later on!

And after the parade and the interviews, on to the ARENA!

the earth, my butt, and other big round things.
    by Carolyn Mackler

In this book many things happen but one that stood out to me was, when Virgina goes through an argument with her self about if she is related to her family. Her family is all brunette, smart, and skinny- in her eyes they are perfect. She doesnt fit in with her family very well and her best friend just moved to Walla Walla and now she doesnt have many friends at school. The only friend she has, isnt the typical friend. They go through alot even though they dont even talk…

    Mrs. Northcutt Reply:

You’ve certainly got a handle on who Virginia is! I just love her character because she seems SO real. How do you feel about her so far?

You did forget to leave us with some “cliffhanger questions”!

The title of my book is “Cirque Du Freak” and it’s from the Cirque Du Freak series. It’s about a boy named Darren Shan whose best friend Steve gets them tickets to go see a freak show (you guessed it, the Cirque Du Freak). The freak show had performers like Alexander Ribs, The bearded lady, Rhamus Twobellies, Hans Hands, Evra the Snake Boy, Larten Crepsley, and Darrens favorite, the spider Madam Octa! After the show Steve told Darren to walk home without him and he would catch up. Why did Steve stay after the show? Will Darren see Madam Octa again? If you want to find out, read this book! :D

Which book in the series are you up to now?

Are you planning on going to see the movie next month?
