Week #3 – 7th/8th Grade – 9/7 to 9/11

September 7th, 2009 by Mrs. Northcutt in 2009 Book Projects - Fall · 7th Grade · 8th Grade · Books · 84 Comments

Guess what, kids? We’ve got a bit of a game-changer on our hands this week!

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs. Martin’s 7th Grade Reading Class at Jessie Clark Middle School in Lexington, KY to the party! They will be joining us for the duration of the project and will be reading from the same book lists as the 7th and 8th graders at LeGrande. This is a big experiment for Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Scott and myself (Mrs. Northcutt) and we hope that it works like we think it will!

I hope that you LG kids have been enjoying your reading so far and I’ll be curious to see how many JCMS students already have gotten their hands on a project book! There are some really excellent choices on your list and I hope that you’ve been able find some material that has kept your attention! Oh, and I REALLY hope that you used part of the 3-day weekend to read! I know that I got quite a few comments on the Week #2 post to moderate over the break!

So, here are the prompts of the week…

  • What book did you choose as your second project book? JCMS students, just tell us what book you chose to read since you’re just getting started. LG students really should be reading their second book by now, but I also know that some of my students are on your third or fourth books! Go you!

and

  • Explain how you came to a decision on what book you were going to read for this round. Maybe you didn’t get your first choice when we started, maybe you picked it based on another student’s blog responses maybe I recommended it to you or maybe it was a random choice that just sounded good at the time. It could be just about anything. Whatever it was, we want to know!

All right, gang. Don’t be shy! Let’s get to know one another a little bit through our literature discussion!

Week #2 – 7th/8th Grade – 8/31 to 9/4

August 31st, 2009 by Mrs. Northcutt in 2009 Book Projects - Fall · 7th Grade · 8th Grade · 49 Comments

Hello again, my friends! We are now in Week #2 of our Reading Project and I have a small housekeeping issue to discuss with you.

PLEASE be careful when you are selecting the blog post to which you are planning to respond! I had some issues last week and over the weekend with students who had written lovely comments, but they wrote them in the WRONG PLACE. To preserve what little sanity I have left, I did NOT approve those comments and I sent emails to those students telling them that they needed to re-post.

This is not the first time Mrs. Scott and I have taken students to this particular rodeo, so there are OTHER posts that have “Week #2″ in the title! If you notice, our posts for this project have the dates of our particular “Week #2″ in them, so hopefully that should help get you to where you need to be going!

So without further adieu, this week’s topic is (drumroll, please!) SETTING!

  • Describe the setting of your first project book (and pretty please include the title of the book in your comment!). Remember that setting is made up of two concepts – place and time – and you need to describe them BOTH. Let’s think of setting more in terms of time period than time of day and if there is a city, state or country that is a part of your setting then that would be helpful, as well.

and

  • Tell us about a specific event in the book and explain how the setting was important to that plot point. Setting and plot always work together and we want you to illustrate that for us using your book! Select an event and then describe how the “where/when” of that event taking place is important to the “what” that is happening in the story. We’re looking for a setting-plot connection!

We look forward to reading your responses!

Week #1 – 7th/8th Grade – 8/24 to 8/28

Second verse, same as the first…

And by that, dear students, I am referring to the fact that there are TWO (count them!) posts for this project. One is for the 5th and 6th graders and the other is for the 7th and 8th graders. Please do not confuse the two!

Welcome to what may be your first experience with blogging! In class, we are going to walk you through the process of responding to us teacher-types and to each other , but remember that this is part of your assignment for this 9 weeks. It can be lots of fun if you are willing to put some thought into your posts, BUT it can be very frustrating if you don’t. After all, responding to people who state their ideas clearly is SO much easier than struggling to figure out what someone is discussing!

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE WRITING YOUR COMMENTS ON THE CORRECT POST OR THEY WILL BE DELETED. I’m just telling. With that out of the way, on with the topic.

This is a two-part question.

  • Name the title of your first project book and describe the main character. Include info such as the character’s age, physical features, and aspects of their personality.

AND

  • Describe how you feel about the main character of your book. Do you like them? Dislike them? Do you think that you would want to interact with the character if he/she/it was a real person? Make sure that you tell us WHY you feel the way that you do.

Clear as mud? I hope so. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in person or email me.

Super Sweet!

August 6th, 2009 by Mrs. Northcutt in Books · Horror Fiction · Movies from Books · 1 Comment

Hi, gang! We’re all back from summer break and I have a special surprise.

I found the link to the video below in my Inbox on this morning and I was so psyched about it that I thought I’d make it the subject of my first post of the 09-10 school year!

I understand that you can’t access it at school, but you CAN watch it at home (and you know I’ll show it in Library class)! This film is apparently based on the first three books of the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan. Apparently some Hollywood big-shot thought that the title of the first book wasn’t catchy or easily pronounceable enough so, it has been officially re-titled, The Vampire’s Assistant (which happens to be the title of the second book in the series).

You can visit the official website for the movie HERE or you can cruise by Darren Shan’s website and check out ever more cool stuff.

I think this is a great way to start the year!

Cirque fans, let me know what you’re thinking about this!
